Viv will work with you to discover which approach works best for you.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or CBT has been researched extensively and found to be very effective. It works by looking at the interaction between thoughts, feelings and behaviour. You will learn to catch the thought you are having and examine and make changes to it in order to then affect your feelings and behaviour. You will gain knowledge and learn skills about the issue that has brought you to counselling. In this way you can address fears and anxiety, negative thought patterns, behaviours that are causing problems and much more.
Mindfulness is the practice of focussing on the present moment without judging yourself. The brain is constantly active – thinking, ruminating, worrying, calculating, remembering. It is rarely calm and rested. By focussing on the breath and by relaxing the body, Mindfulness can effectively assist your body and mind to relax. There have been many clinical trials on Mindfulness Meditation and the evidence shows that it is very effective for many people in reducing stress, anxiety, pain, depression and insomnia as well as other conditions.
Solution Focussed Therapy (SFT) sometimes known as Solution Focussed Brief Therapy (SFBT) uses practical, goal directed counselling. It is usually short term and uses strategies built on your past successes to achieve realistic goals. Rather than delving deeply into problems, SFT focuses on goals and solutions to reach your desired result.
Narrative Therapy focusses on your values, skills, beliefs and abilities. It is a non- judgemental, respectful way of working that aims to assist you to reduce the problems and the effect of those problems in your life. Narrative Therapy involves a particular way of enquiring about your issues. It examines the stories and beliefs that shape one’s life. You, the client will take a greater role in choosing the direction the counselling takes. Together, you and the therapist will address issues using a Narrative Therapy framework in order to reach a happier, healthier life.

“I came to counselling because I was experiencing anxiety in many areas of my life. As I opened up about my relationship, I came to see my partner’s behaviour towards me was not ok. I am so grateful to Viv for working slowly but surely with me. My anxiety has gone and I am back to the happy, confident self I was all those years ago.” Ellen
